Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1951 and produced by A.P. Stolen in Denmark, the AP19 “Papa Bear” Chair is one of the defining works of Danish Modern design. Celebrated for its unmistakable sculptural silhouette, generous proportions, and exceptional comfort, the model demonstrates Wegner’s remarkable ability to unite traditional craftsmanship with an intuitive understanding of the human body.
The chair takes its familiar nickname from its embracing form. A tall, gently curved back rises into pronounced wings that wrap around the sitter, while the projecting armrests terminate in distinctive exposed wooden “paws.” These sculptural details have become one of the most recognizable characteristics of the AP19, providing a warm material counterpoint to the fully upholstered body.
This example has been professionally reupholstered in vibrant red leather to an exceptionally high technical standard, with careful attention to the original proportions, upholstery construction, and distinctive detailing of Wegner’s design. The beautifully executed button tufting, precise stitching, carefully shaped padding, and tailored edges demonstrate the quality of the restoration. The result preserves the chair’s sculptural character while introducing a striking contemporary colour.
The exposed wooden armrest tips and tapered legs retain their natural warmth, creating an elegant contrast with the vivid red leather. The separate seat cushion rests above a traditional woven webbing support system, contributing to the generous comfort and carefully considered construction for which the model is celebrated.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the central figures of twentieth-century Danish furniture design. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design, Wegner approached furniture through an unusually close understanding of materials, construction, proportion, and ergonomics. Over the course of his career, his work helped establish Danish Modern internationally, with seating designs that remain among the most influential examples of postwar furniture.
The AP19 occupies a particularly important position within this body of work. Designed at the beginning of the 1950s, its expressive upholstered form differs considerably from the visually lighter wooden chairs for which Wegner is equally celebrated. Here, comfort becomes an essential part of the chair’s visual identity: the broad wings, projecting arms, deep seat, and carefully shaped back create an enveloping composition without sacrificing the precision characteristic of Wegner’s work.
Presented in excellent restored condition, this Papa Bear Chair combines the historical importance of Wegner’s original design with the craftsmanship of a carefully executed upholstery restoration. The rich red leather brings renewed energy to its iconic silhouette while preserving the character and comfort that have made the AP19 an enduring classic.
