Designed by Arne Vodder in the late 1950s and produced by Sibast Møbler in Denmark, the Model 29A — also known as “Triennale” sideboard — is one of Vodder’s most recognized storage designs and a defining example of postwar Danish Modern furniture.
Executed in teak, the exceptionally long sideboard balances its substantial storage capacity with a remarkably restrained profile. Six slender tapered legs elevate the cabinet, while the fully finished back allows the piece to stand freely within a room rather than being restricted to placement against a wall.
The most distinctive feature of the Model 29A is its pair of reversible sliding doors. Finished in teak on one side and contrasting black on the other, the panels can be removed and reversed, allowing the appearance of the sideboard to shift between a continuous wood composition and a more graphic combination of teak and black. This ability to transform the facade reflects Vodder’s characteristic integration of functional experimentation into otherwise understated forms.
At the center is a vertical bank of seven drawers with Vodder’s characteristic sculpted fronts. Rather than relying on applied hardware, the concave profiles are carved directly into the drawer faces, creating integrated pulls while introducing a rhythmic sequence of curves across the otherwise linear cabinet.
A further compartment incorporates a drop-front bar, adding another layer of functionality to the expansive storage configuration. Together, the reversible doors, sculpted drawers, bar compartment, and freestanding construction make the Model 29A considerably more sophisticated than a conventional sideboard.
The design became closely associated with Vodder’s international recognition during this period. The OS 29A was connected with the Milan Triennale, where Vodder received first prize in 1957. Vodder himself later identified the 29A sideboard as his favorite among his furniture designs.
The Model 29A exemplifies Vodder’s approach to Danish Modernism: functional requirements are resolved through carefully considered details, while organic curves, tactile surfaces, and refined cabinetmaking soften the architectural scale of the piece.
