Designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen in 1956 and produced by Søborg Møbler in Denmark, the Model 311 extendable dining table is a refined example of postwar Danish Modern design, combining beautifully resolved proportions, thoughtful functionality, and the warmth of teak.

The table is defined by its clean architectural silhouette and softly articulated details. The generous round-to-oval tabletop is supported by a restrained wooden structure that emphasizes the natural character of the material rather than relying on ornament. Its balanced proportions and understated construction reflect the functional clarity that distinguished the work of Hvidt and Mølgaard-Nielsen during the height of Danish Modernism.

A removable extension leaf transforms the table from a compact dining format into a substantially larger surface, increasing its overall width from 49” (124.5 cm) to approximately 70.5” (179 cm). This flexibility allows the table to transition easily between everyday dining and larger gatherings while preserving the visual coherence of the original design.

Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were among the important figures of twentieth-century Danish furniture design. Their long collaboration explored efficient construction, high-quality craftsmanship, and furniture suited to modern domestic life. Working with respected Danish manufacturers including Søborg Møbler, the designers developed a distinctive vocabulary characterized by structural clarity, elegant proportions, and an intelligent use of natural materials.

The Model 311 exemplifies this approach. Its extendable format provides practical adaptability without compromising the restrained character of the design, while the teak gives the piece a rich warmth and expressive grain that changes subtly across the broad tabletop.

This example has been professionally refinished and is presented in excellent vintage condition. The restoration highlights the natural color and grain of the teak while preserving the character of this mid-century piece. The structure remains solid and the extension system functions as intended.

A beautifully proportioned and highly functional example of Danish Modern furniture, equally suited to a dedicated dining room or a contemporary open-plan interior.
