Designed by Rolf Rastad and Adolf Relling and produced by Dokka Møbler in Norway during the 1950s, this lounge chair is an uncommon high-back version of the duo’s sculptural seating design, combining an exposed teak frame with a deeply upholstered, suspended seat and back.
The chair is defined by its exceptionally tall and gently curved upholstered profile. Rising to just over 40 inches, the high back provides substantial support while maintaining the light appearance of the exposed structure. Four restrained button details articulate the upper portion of the backrest without interrupting its continuous form.
The teak frame provides a strong visual counterpoint to the upholstery. Slender angled legs are connected by low horizontal stretchers, while the sculpted armrests sweep upward and backward in a continuous line. Their broad, gently shaped upper surfaces provide a natural resting point for the hands while emphasizing the organic character of the design.
Rather than enclosing the upholstered body within a heavy frame, Rastad and Relling visually separated the two elements. The seat and back form a continuous upholstered shell that appears suspended within the surrounding teak structure, leaving open space beneath and around the upholstery. This separation gives the substantial high-back chair an unexpectedly light architectural presence.
The burnt-orange upholstery complements the warm tone of the teak and emphasizes the long uninterrupted curve from the upper back through the seat. With its generous proportions, high back, and relaxed seating angle, the chair is particularly comfortable for extended reading or lounging.
Rastad and Relling were important figures in postwar Norwegian furniture design, working together from their Oslo studio and developing furniture for several Norwegian manufacturers. Their work for Dokka Møbler is characterized by carefully articulated wooden structures, organic transitions, and an emphasis on comfort without visually heavy construction.
