Designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Daverkosen in Denmark during the 1950s, the Minerva Sofa Daybed is one of the most celebrated multifunctional designs of the Danish Modern period. This example retains its original FD emblem, an important mark of authenticity from one of Denmark's most respected furniture manufacturers.
The design is defined by a beautifully proportioned solid teak frame, elevated on slender tapered legs and complemented by chromed steel back supports. The combination of warm teak, polished steel, and clean architectural lines reflects the thoughtful balance between craftsmanship and industrial innovation that characterized the work of Hvidt & Mølgaard.
This example has been professionally reupholstered in a rich blue bouclé fabric. The textured upholstery introduces softness and depth while complementing the restrained elegance of the original design. Internally sprung cushions in both the seat and back provide exceptional comfort and support.
One of the defining features of the Minerva is its dual functionality. As a sofa, it comfortably seats three people. By simply removing the back cushion, it converts into a generous daybed suitable for lounging, reading, or accommodating overnight guests. This versatility helped establish the Minerva as one of the most successful Danish furniture designs of its era.
The sofa remains in excellent vintage condition. The teak frame is well preserved, the structure is solid throughout, and the upholstery presents beautifully.
