Designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen during the 1950s and produced by France & Daverkosen in Denmark, the Model FD 145 combines a high spindle back, sculpted armrests, and a light exposed frame with generous upholstered cushions.
This early France & Daverkosen example is constructed primarily in oak, contrasted by darker teak details at the armrests and sabots. The combination emphasizes the architecture of the chair: the lighter oak defines the structural frame, while teak is reserved for the areas of greatest visual and tactile emphasis.
The long sculpted armrests are among the most distinctive elements of the design. Rising gently from the front supports before sweeping toward the high back, their thin profile gives the chair a continuous, fluid line when viewed from the side. Small teak sabots at the ends of the tapered legs repeat the darker material and visually complete the composition.
The rear of the chair is equally considered. Seven slender wooden spindles extend vertically between the lower back rail and curved upper rail, supporting the loose back cushion while leaving much of the structure visible. The open construction gives the chair a particularly light appearance from behind and makes it well suited to placement away from a wall.
Beneath the loose cushions, a metal spring suspension system spans the seat frame, providing flexible support while keeping the structural construction clearly expressed.
This example retains its France & Daverkosen manufacturer's stamp, reading “FRANCE & DAVERKOSEN / MADE IN DENMARK,” providing direct documentation of its early Danish production. The chair is presented with warm rust-toned upholstery, complementing the natural oak and darker teak details throughout the frame.
