Designed by Torbjørn Afdal in 1958, the Broadway lounge chair is one of the Norwegian designer’s most sculptural works, combining an expressive wooden frame with a compact upholstered seat suspended within its structure.
The chair is immediately recognizable by its turned side rails, which rise continuously from the front legs, form the armrests, and terminate in distinctive upward-pointing ends. The fluid transition between legs and arms gives the Broadway its characteristic horn-like silhouette while demonstrating Afdal’s particular sensitivity to the sculptural possibilities of wood.
Within this open framework, the upholstered seat and back appear visually independent from the surrounding structure. The pronounced recline and compact proportions create a comfortable lounge position while the negative space between upholstery and frame keeps the chair visually light.
The Broadway also occupies an important place in Afdal’s career. Designed in 1958, the chair received a gold medal at the “So Wohnt Europa” craftsmanship fair in Munich in 1959, bringing international recognition to Afdal’s work and to Norwegian furniture design of the period.
A distinctive example of postwar Norwegian design, the Broadway combines carefully resolved woodworking, ergonomic form, and a particularly expressive silhouette without sacrificing the restraint associated with Scandinavian modernism.
