The AX or "Axe" chair was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. The design is defined by its sculptural use of laminated wood, where structure and form are developed simultaneously through controlled bending and shaping.
The frame is constructed from molded beech plywood, forming the primary structure of the legs and arms. A darker contrasting element runs through the side profile, typically executed in mahogany, creating a continuous visual line that connects the leg to the backrest. This contrast is a defining feature of the model, emphasizing both the geometry and the layered construction.
The seat is upholstered in fabric, with leather accents adding a secondary material contrast. The chair offers a slightly reclined and supportive seating position, with proportions that balance comfort and structure. The laminated construction allows for thin yet strong elements, giving the chair a light visual presence.
This example has been recently restored and is in excellent condition. The frame is clean and stable, with well-preserved surfaces. The upholstery presents well, and all structural elements remain sound.
A clear example of mid-century Danish design, where material innovation and form are resolved through a disciplined and expressive construction.
