Designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard for Dansk during the 1960s, the Congo ice bucket remains one of the most recognized examples of Scandinavian modern barware and tabletop design from the mid-century period.
The piece is constructed using solid teak staves, carefully joined and turned in a manner derived from traditional cooperage techniques rather than standard veneered construction. This method gives the bucket both structural integrity and a strong sculptural quality, while allowing the grain variation of the teak to remain fully visible throughout the surface.
The silhouette tapers gently toward the base, with the upper edges rising into integrated supports for the curved carrying handle. The lid fits neatly within the recessed opening and includes a carved teak pull that maintains the continuity of the overall form. Inside, the original insulated liner creates a functional contrast between industrial material and handcrafted exterior.
Jens Quistgaard played a central role in bringing Scandinavian modern design into everyday domestic life, and pieces such as the Congo series became particularly influential for their ability to combine utility with highly refined form. The design has since become widely collected and is represented in major museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The ice bucket remains in excellent vintage condition. The teak surfaces are clean and well preserved, with a rich and even patina throughout. The interior liner remains intact and functional, and all components fit properly.
A landmark example of Danish modern tabletop design, where craftsmanship, utility, and sculptural form are resolved with remarkable clarity and restraint.
