Designed by Erik Buch and produced for O.D. Møbler in Denmark during the 1960s, these Model 50 dining chairs are refined examples of Danish Modern design, combining sculptural teak frames with remarkably light proportions and carefully considered ergonomic details.
The design is particularly distinguished by the relationship between the upholstered elements and the exposed wooden structure. Rather than visually resting directly on a heavy frame, the seat and curved backrest are positioned within the teak structure with subtle separation between the individual components. This creates the characteristic light, almost floating appearance associated with Buch’s seating designs.
The solid teak frames are shaped with elegant transitions and gently sculpted profiles, allowing the natural warmth and expressive grain of the wood to become an integral part of the composition. On the armchair version, the extended armrests introduce an additional sculptural element, tapering gracefully into the surrounding frame while providing comfortable support.
This collection includes both armchairs and armless dining chairs, allowing the different versions of the design to be used together around a dining table. The armchairs provide a more substantial presence at the heads of a table, while the narrower armless chairs maintain the same visual language in a more compact format.
The chairs have been upholstered in black Elmosoft leather, creating a restrained contrast with the warm teak frames. The smooth leather emphasizes the clean geometry of the upholstered surfaces while allowing the sculptural woodwork to remain visually prominent.
Erik Buch (1923–1981) was a Danish furniture designer whose work became closely associated with the refined, organic character of postwar Scandinavian design. His seating is particularly recognized for its careful attention to proportion, ergonomic shaping, and sophisticated integration of upholstery with exposed wooden structures. His designs remain sought after examples of the craftsmanship and material sensitivity that defined Danish Modern furniture during the mid-twentieth century.
The combination of armchairs and armless chairs is particularly appealing as a coordinated dining arrangement, preserving a consistent design language while introducing subtle variation in scale and silhouette.
