Designed by Erik Wørts and produced by Niels Eilersen in Denmark during the 1960s, this Safari chair is a refined interpretation of the collapsible campaign-chair archetype that became an important reference within Scandinavian modern furniture.
The chair is constructed around a visually light solid rosewood frame, distinguished by its deep tone and pronounced natural grain. Rather than enclosing the sitter within a conventional upholstered structure, Wørts reduced the chair to a carefully articulated framework supporting suspended leather surfaces.
A broad brown leather seat and backrest are tensioned across the wooden structure, while leather straps form the armrests and contribute directly to the chair’s flexible construction. Small metal fittings provide subtle points of contrast while emphasizing the straightforward, mechanical logic of the design.
The suspended construction is central to both the appearance and comfort of the chair. The leather responds naturally to the weight of the sitter, allowing the seat and back to flex without requiring heavy upholstery or extensive padding. The result is a chair that feels relaxed and informal while retaining the disciplined proportions associated with Danish Modern design.
The Safari chair belongs to a broader twentieth-century tradition of Scandinavian designers reinterpreting portable campaign furniture for the modern domestic interior. Wørts translated this inherently practical typology through carefully selected materials, refined joinery, and an unusually economical structural vocabulary.
This example remains in original vintage condition. The brown leather has developed a rich, naturally varied patina over decades of use, complementing the darker rosewood frame and preserving the material character that makes original examples particularly compelling.
