Designed by Johannes Andersen for Uldum Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s, this extendable dining table combines a compact circular form with a substantial extension system capable of transforming the table into a long oval dining surface.
When closed, the table presents as a 47.25-inch (120 cm) round dining table, comfortably proportioned for four people. Its restrained circular top is supported by four slender tapered legs positioned toward the perimeter, preserving generous clearance beneath the table.
Particularly characteristic is the transition between the structural apron and legs. Rather than meeting as independent rectilinear components, the apron is shaped as it approaches each leg, creating a softer transition between the horizontal and vertical elements. The slightly angled legs continue this sense of movement and give the table a lighter stance despite its substantial extension capacity.
The table includes two 23.6-inch (60 cm) extension leaves. With one leaf installed, the table extends to 70.9 inches (180 cm); with both leaves in place, it reaches 94.5 inches (240 cm), creating a generous elongated dining surface suitable for larger gatherings.
The extension leaves incorporate matching wooden apron sections, allowing the horizontal profile beneath the tabletop to continue across the expanded table. This detail gives the fully extended configuration a particularly resolved appearance, with the additional sections integrated visually into the architecture of the base rather than appearing simply inserted into the top.
Executed in teak, the table displays the warm coloration and linear grain associated with Danish furniture of the period. Its combination of a compact round configuration and two substantial extension leaves makes it especially adaptable: intimate when closed and capable of accommodating a considerably larger dining arrangement when fully extended.
