Designed by Finn Juhl in 1962, the Bwana lounge chair, Model 152, is one of the Danish architect’s most sculptural seating designs. Produced by France & Søn, the chair demonstrates Juhl’s characteristic approach of visually separating the upholstered seat from its supporting wooden structure, creating a composition that appears remarkably light despite its generous proportions.
The exposed solid teak frame is treated as an expressive element in its own right. Sculpted members transition through carefully resolved joints and culminate at the front of the armrests in the Bwana’s distinctive rounded wooden “pommels.” These tactile details provide one of the chair’s most recognizable signatures while emphasizing Juhl’s interest in the relationship between the human body and the furniture it touches.
The tall, gently shaped backrest and generous seat create a particularly relaxed seating position. Rather than concealing the structure beneath upholstery, Juhl allowed the cushions and frame to read as independent elements, an approach fundamental to many of his most celebrated designs and one that gives the Bwana its characteristic floating appearance.
This example has been professionally upholstered in premium black Elmosoft leather. Its soft natural grain and understated finish complement the warmth and sculptural character of the exposed wooden frame while preserving the visual clarity of Juhl’s original composition.
Designed at a period when Finn Juhl’s work had become internationally recognized, the Bwana reflects the expressive side of Danish Modernism. Its combination of organic woodworking, generous comfort, and clearly articulated construction distinguishes it from the more restrained functionalism of many contemporary Scandinavian designs.
