This Jangada lounge chair and ottoman were designed by Jean Gillon in Brazil during the 1960s and remain among the most important and recognizable expressions of Brazilian modernist furniture design.

The sculptural frame is crafted entirely from solid rosewood, showcasing dramatic grain movement and the deep tonal richness associated with old-growth Brazilian hardwoods from the period. Gillon approached furniture as a system of architecture rather than decoration, and the Jangada exemplifies this philosophy through its exposed structure, honest construction, and low, grounded proportions.

What makes the Jangada particularly singular is its suspended seating system. Rather than relying on conventional upholstery methods, the leather cushions are supported by an original hand-tensioned net suspension that flexes naturally with the body. The sensation is remarkably responsive and relaxed, creating a floating comfort more commonly associated with a hammock than a traditional lounge chair. This combination of structural clarity and softness became one of Gillon’s defining contributions to Brazilian design.

The cushions are upholstered in rich brown leather, developing a warm dialogue with the rosewood frame while emphasizing the natural character of the materials. The leather shows a soft and even patina consistent with careful vintage use.

The set remains in excellent vintage condition. The rosewood frame is structurally sound, with beautifully preserved surfaces and clean joinery throughout. The original suspension net remains intact and fully functional, and the leather cushions retain their shape and comfort exceptionally well.

We also have another matching Jangada chair and ottoman available in black leather. Please see our other listings for additional details.

Today, authentic Jangada pieces have become increasingly difficult to source, particularly complete examples with matching ottomans and original structural elements preserved. The design occupies an important place within the history of Brazilian modernism, sitting alongside works by Jorge Zalszupin, Percival Lafer, and Sergio Rodrigues while remaining unmistakably Jean Gillon in character.

A deeply expressive and highly collectible example of Brazilian furniture design, where craftsmanship, engineering, and comfort are resolved through material honesty and sculptural restraint.
