Designed by Romanian-born Brazilian designer Jean Gillon during the 1960s, the Rodeio sofa is a distinctive expression of Brazilian modernism, combining an exposed hardwood structure with generous leather upholstery and an unusually direct approach to construction.
The sculptural frame is executed in Brazilian rosewood, with substantial shaped members supporting a deeply upholstered leather seat, back, and arms. Rather than concealing its construction, the Rodeio makes it a defining part of the design. Wide leather straps are wrapped and tensioned around the wooden frame, forming a visible suspension system that is particularly expressive across the back of the sofa.
A continuous, generously proportioned leather cushion rests within this structure, with deep button tufting creating the relaxed volumes of the seat and back. The upholstery extends over the arms, producing a softer counterpoint to the exposed rosewood frame and leather suspension beneath.
This example retains its original tan leather, displaying extensive patina from decades of use. The upholstery shows creasing, scratches, abrasions, finish loss, and pronounced wear along several edges and high-contact areas. These characteristics are retained as part of its original vintage condition. The rosewood frame remains well preserved and displays strong natural figuring throughout.
The sofa also retains its original WoodArt label, identifying Jean Gillon as the designer and referencing the company’s handmade Brazilian rosewood production.
A substantial and highly expressive example of Gillon’s approach to Brazilian furniture, where structure, leatherwork, comfort, and tropical hardwood remain deliberately visible as independent elements of the design.
