Designed by Jens Quistgaard for Nissen in Denmark during the 1960s, this set of three nesting tables is a refined example of Danish Modern furniture, combining compact functionality with expressive solid teak construction.
Each table is constructed in richly grained solid teak, with exposed finger joints along the upper edges forming one of the design’s most distinctive details. Rather than concealing the construction, the joinery becomes part of the visual language of the piece, reflecting Quistgaard’s characteristic interest in traditional craftsmanship and the natural qualities of wood.
Large circular cutouts on the sides give the tables their recognizable sculptural character while also functioning as integrated handles. The openings visually lighten the substantial teak construction and make the individual tables easy to move and arrange.
The three progressively sized tables nest neatly beneath one another, allowing the complete set to occupy the footprint of a single side table when not in use. Separated, they can function as individual side tables, occasional tables, or display surfaces.
Jens Quistgaard (1919–2008) was one of the most prolific figures of postwar Danish design. Trained in sculpture and traditional craftsmanship, he brought an unusually tactile approach to industrial design. As the founding designer of Dansk Designs in 1954, Quistgaard helped introduce Scandinavian design to an international audience through furniture, tableware, cookware, and household objects characterized by thoughtful functionality and expressive use of materials.
The tables remain in very good vintage condition, showing a warm natural patina and minor signs of age and use consistent with their vintage character.
