Designed by Danish-American designer Jens Risom, this generously proportioned side table combines a broad square tabletop with an unusually expressive architectural frame, balancing straightforward geometry with carefully shaped structural details.

The design is organized around two substantial lateral frame assemblies. Each consists of a pair of slender legs connected at the top by a long sculpted wooden rail that rises above the tabletop in a shallow curve. Rather than functioning simply as raised edges applied to the surface, these elements form an integral part of the table's supporting structure, creating a distinctive continuous line from one leg to the other.

The tabletop is suspended between these opposing structural sides and projects beyond them at the front and rear. Its corners are subtly clipped where the surface approaches the lateral frames, creating a precise transition between the broad horizontal top and the curved structural elements.

This relationship is particularly effective when viewed from above. The large uninterrupted wooden surface appears almost contained between two independent sculptural frames, while the projecting front and rear edges emphasize the separation between tabletop and structure.

The four legs are slender and slightly tapered, providing a visual counterpoint to the substantial top. At just over 24 inches high and approximately 30 inches square, the table is considerably taller and larger than a conventional low coffee table, making it particularly suitable as an end table, side table, or a substantial occasional table positioned between lounge seating.

Jens Risom was born in Copenhagen in 1916 and trained at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts before establishing his career in the United States. His early collaboration with Hans Knoll helped introduce Scandinavian modernist principles to the developing American modern furniture industry, and he later established Jens Risom Design, producing an extensive range of residential and contract furniture.
