Designed by Hans J. Wegner circa 1960 and produced by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Copenhagen, the JH518, commonly known as the “Bull Horn” chair, is defined by the sculptural continuous backrest that gives the model its distinctive profile.

The broad backrest sweeps outward from the centre before terminating in two short armrests, creating the horn-like silhouette from which the chair takes its name. Constructed in teak, the backrest incorporates contrasting rosewood joinery at its centre, transforming the structural connection into a deliberate visual detail.

The sculptural upper section is balanced by a restrained lower frame. Four slender legs support the upholstered seat, with the front legs extending slightly above the seat rails and terminating in softly rounded ends. The open structure gives the chair visual lightness while keeping the emphasis on the sweeping backrest and exposed woodworking.

This example retains its original brown leather upholstery, showing the natural patina, creasing, and age-related character developed through use. The existing upholstery can be preserved in its current original condition, or professional reupholstery can be arranged through our workshop at an additional cost, allowing the buyer to select a preferred leather or textile. Wegner’s collaboration with Johannes Hansen produced some of his most technically demanding cabinetmaker furniture. Trained as a cabinetmaker himself, Wegner frequently treated exposed joints as part of the visual composition rather than concealing them. On the JH518, the contrasting joinery at the centre of the backrest draws attention directly to the point where its two sculpted sections meet.

With its broad stance, relatively shallow depth, and seat height of approximately 17.3 inches, the JH518 combines the presence of an armchair with proportions suitable for dining, desk, or occasional seating.
