Produced in Canada during the 1960s by Lotte and Gunnar Bostlund, this Lotte table lamp combines an organically shaped ceramic base with the distinctive fiberglass shade that became a defining feature of the studio’s lighting.
The sculptural ceramic base is particularly notable for its elegant teardrop form. Broad and gently rounded toward the lower body before narrowing fluidly toward the neck, the drop-shaped silhouette gives the lamp a strong sculptural presence while retaining the restrained simplicity associated with Scandinavian-influenced Canadian modernism.
The ceramic is finished in a soft celadon green crackle glaze, introducing a fine network of surface lines that gives depth and texture to the otherwise minimal form. The subtle variation of the glaze complements the organic geometry of the teardrop base and emphasizes the handcrafted character of the ceramic.
Above, the characteristic Lotte shade combines translucent fiberglass with a woven natural-fibre treatment. When illuminated, the fiberglass softly diffuses the light while the linear wrapping introduces texture and creates a warm, atmospheric glow. The characteristic upper ring provides a simple architectural finish to the composition.
Lotte lamps occupy a distinctive position within Canadian Mid-Century Modern design. Danish-born Lotte and Gunnar Bostlund established their ceramic and lighting practice in Ontario, combining the material sensibility of Scandinavian ceramics with the emerging modernist vocabulary of postwar North America. Their lamps became particularly recognizable for the integration of sculptural ceramic bodies with textured fiberglass shades.
This example is an especially balanced expression of that language, with the elongated teardrop base, celadon crackle glaze, and translucent shade creating a composition that remains decorative even when the lamp is not illuminated.
