Set of six chairs designed by Johannes Andersen and produced by Uldum Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s, the Model 16 dining chair is defined by its sculptural teak frame and distinctive sweeping backrest.
The central feature of the design is the broad curved backrest, which extends outward on either side of the sitter before turning gently forward. Rather than treating the back as a separate horizontal element, Andersen integrated it visually with the rear structure of the chair, creating a continuous sculptural line that gives the Model 16 its recognizable profile.
The substantial upper section is balanced by four slender tapered legs and a restrained seat frame. Viewed from the side and rear, the transitions between the backrest, rear supports, and legs are particularly expressive, demonstrating the organic approach to woodworking associated with Andersen's furniture of the period.
Executed in teak, the frames display the warm tone and pronounced grain characteristic of the material. The upholstered seats provide a simple visual counterpoint to the sculpted wood and keep the emphasis on the chair's curved structural elements.
Johannes Andersen was an important contributor to postwar Danish furniture design, working with a number of Danish manufacturers throughout his career. His designs for Uldum Møbelfabrik are particularly associated with expressive woodworking and softened, organic profiles. The Model 16 is a documented Andersen design for Uldum and remains recognizable for its combination of a sweeping backrest, compact proportions, and slender supporting frame.
