Designed by Percival Lafer during the 1960s, the MP-211 sofa stands as one of the defining seating designs of Brazilian modernism. The piece reflects Lafer’s unique approach to furniture design, where engineering, ergonomics, and material expression are treated with equal importance.
The sofa is defined by its deeply channeled black leather upholstery, creating a strong horizontal rhythm across the seating surface while reinforcing the sculptural volume of the form. The seat and backrest are conceived as a continuous suspended shell, designed to create an enveloping and highly comfortable seating experience. Rather than emphasizing rigid geometry, Lafer prioritized softness and adaptability, producing seating that feels relaxed without sacrificing visual structure.
The exposed Brazilian rosewood legs introduce a striking contrast between the warmth and density of the wood and the supple leather upholstery. Visible structural fasteners and suspension details remain intentionally exposed throughout the construction, reflecting Lafer’s characteristic approach of turning engineering solutions into part of the visual identity of the piece.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Percival Lafer became internationally recognized for redefining Brazilian modern furniture through innovative industrial production methods combined with exceptional comfort. His work helped establish Brazilian modernism as a major presence within the global mid-century design movement, particularly throughout North America and Europe.
The sofa remains in excellent vintage condition. The leather upholstery is clean and well preserved, with a soft surface and even tone throughout. The rosewood legs and structural elements remain solid and stable, with beautifully preserved grain and clean joinery throughout.
A highly expressive example of Brazilian modern design, where comfort, structure, and sculptural form are resolved through clarity of material and construction.
