A compelling example of Brazilian modernism, this 1960s MP41 sofa by Percival Lafer reflects the designer’s commitment to structural clarity, material honesty, and relaxed comfort. The design balances a robust architectural frame with a visually light suspended seating system, creating a presence that is both grounded and inviting.
The frame is crafted in solid Jatobá, a dense Brazilian hardwood known for its strength and rich tonal character. The structure remains fully expressed, emphasizing the clarity of construction and the direct relationship between material and form that defines Lafer’s work.
Suspended within the frame, a system of wide leather belt support straps carries the upholstered seat and back cushions, creating a subtle floating effect while providing excellent comfort and resilience.
This example has been newly upholstered in light brown leather, selected for its supple character and natural warmth.
The sofa remains in excellent structural condition, showing only light, honest signs of use consistent with its age.
