Produced by Kroehler Manufacturing Company in the United States during the 1960s, this pair of Avant lounge chairs captures the more expressive side of American Mid-Century Modern seating. Their low proportions, sculptural profiles, and integrated arms create a distinctly architectural silhouette while maintaining the generous comfort associated with Kroehler’s upholstered furniture.
The defining feature is the continuous curvature of the arms. Rising organically from the sides of the seat before sweeping toward the backrest, they give the chairs a fluid profile with very little visual interruption. The upholstered volumes are balanced by slender tapered walnut legs, which lift the substantial bodies away from the floor and give the design a lighter stance.
Kroehler was one of the major American furniture manufacturers of the twentieth century, producing a broad range of upholstered furniture for the expanding postwar domestic market. The Avant line reflects the company’s engagement with the more sculptural vocabulary of American modern furniture during the 1960s, combining expressive upholstered forms with restrained wooden supports.
Their compact footprint makes the chairs particularly adaptable. They can function as a matched pair in a living room or conversation area, while their proportions also allow each chair to work independently as an occasional or reading chair.
Both chairs are presented in vintage condition, retaining their period upholstery and walnut legs. The surviving fabric gives the pair considerable period character, with age and wear consistent with vintage use.
