1960s Pepper Mill by Henning Koppel for Georg Jensen in pewter and ebony

This pepper mill was designed by Henning Koppel for Georg Jensen during the mid-20th century and represents one of the most recognizable expressions of Danish modern industrial design. The piece combines sculptural form with daily utility, reflecting Koppel’s approach to transforming domestic objects into highly refined functional sculpture.

The body is crafted in pewter with a soft organic profile, contrasted by a circular ebony lid that introduces both visual weight and material warmth. A small metal adjustment pin sits discreetly at the top, allowing the grinding mechanism to be adjusted while maintaining the overall simplicity of the composition.

Originally trained as a sculptor, Henning Koppel introduced a more fluid and biomorphic language to Georg Jensen production, departing from earlier decorative traditions in favor of softer modern forms. This approach became central to the identity of postwar Danish design and remains highly influential today. The restrained combination of pewter and ebony seen in this piece is particularly associated with Koppel’s work from the period.

The mill remains in excellent vintage condition. The pewter surfaces are exceptionally clean and well preserved, with only light signs of age. The ebony lid remains stable and free from cracking, and the grinding mechanism functions properly. The original Georg Jensen marking remains present on the underside.

Examples in this condition are increasingly difficult to source, particularly with well-preserved pewter surfaces and complete original components intact.

A refined example of Scandinavian modernism, where sculpture and utility are resolved through material, proportion, and restraint.
