Designed by Jean Gillon for WoodArt in Brazil during the 1960s, this sculptural pipe stand reflects the same material sensitivity and architectural clarity found throughout Gillon’s larger modernist furniture works. Executed entirely in solid Brazilian rosewood, the piece transforms a functional domestic object into a compact sculptural centerpiece.
The form is organized through a carefully balanced geometric composition, combining straight architectural lines with softly carved organic recesses. The upper surface incorporates five sculpted pipe rests, each carefully spaced to support individual pipes without visual congestion. The deep carved cavities and rounded transitions reveal the precision of the hand-finishing process while emphasizing the richness and density of the rosewood.
Jean Gillon’s smaller WoodArt objects remain particularly important within the history of Brazilian modernism because they demonstrate how sculptural form and utility could coexist at every scale of production. The use of Brazilian rosewood further reinforces the significance of the piece, as the dramatic tonal variation and expressive grain movement become central elements of the overall composition.
The pipe stand remains in excellent vintage condition. The rosewood surfaces are clean and well preserved, with a rich natural patina and strong grain definition throughout. The structure is solid, with crisp carved detailing and no significant wear or structural issues observed.
