This scoop chair was produced by R. Huber in Canada during the 1960s and represents one of the most recognizable lounge seating forms of Canadian mid-century modern design. The composition is defined by its deeply sculpted seating shell suspended within an exposed solid teak frame, creating a balance between visual softness and structural clarity.
The chair is organized around a continuous upholstered body with a deeply recessed seating position and a pronounced curved backrest that gently envelops the sitter. The generous proportions and angled seating geometry create an exceptionally relaxed lounge posture, while the open teak frame maintains a sense of visual lightness around the substantial upholstered volume.
The design reflects the strong Scandinavian influence present throughout much of the best Canadian modern furniture production during the period. The contrast between the warm teak structure and the soft sculptural upholstery reinforces the architectural quality of the composition without sacrificing comfort.
This example has been professionally reupholstered in light brown leather, offering a warm tonal relationship with the teak frame while preserving the sculptural clarity of the original design. The leather surfaces are clean and consistent throughout, with careful tailoring and soft texture across the seating surfaces.
The chair remains in excellent restored condition. The teak frame is solid and well preserved, with clean joinery and strong grain definition throughout. The leather upholstery is newly completed, and the structure remains stable and ready for daily use.
