Designed by Jean Gillon and produced by Italma / WoodArt in Brazil during the 1960s, this sculptural bowl reflects the same material sensitivity and organic formal language found throughout Gillon’s larger furniture works. Executed in solid Brazilian rosewood, the piece combines utility with a distinctly architectural presence.
The elongated form recalls the silhouette of a canoe or carved vessel, with softly raised ends and a fluid concave interior carefully sculpted from a single solid block of wood. The rich tonal variation and dramatic grain movement of the rosewood remain fully visible throughout the interior and exterior surfaces, emphasizing the natural character of the material.
During the 1960s, Jean Gillon developed the WoodArt line as a way of transforming select hardwood remnants from furniture production into refined domestic objects. These smaller sculptural works carry the same philosophy found in his larger designs, where craftsmanship, material honesty, and organic form are treated as inseparable. Because of the highly expressive grain patterns of Brazilian rosewood, each example remains visually unique.
The bowl remains in excellent vintage condition. The wood surfaces are clean and well preserved, with a rich natural patina and beautifully defined grain throughout. The structure is solid, with no significant wear or structural issues observed.
A refined example of Brazilian modern design, where sculpture and utility are resolved through craftsmanship, proportion, and material expression.
