Designed by Erling Torvits and produced by Heltborg Møbler in Denmark during the 1960s, this highly collectible set of three nesting tables reflects the precision, elegance, and spatial intelligence that defined the best examples of Scandinavian modern furniture.
Executed in richly figured rosewood, each table displays dramatic grain movement and deep tonal variation across the tops, creating naturally expressive compositions of dark chocolate and reddish tones. The surfaces reveal carefully selected veneer work that transforms each table into a unique visual study of material and proportion.
The defining feature of this model lies in its highly resolved nesting system. Hidden guide rails integrated beneath the tops allow the smaller tables to slide precisely beneath the main table while remaining visually suspended, creating an unusually light and architectural appearance. Unlike conventional nesting tables where secondary pieces rest directly on the floor beneath the larger table, this engineered arrangement creates a cleaner silhouette and a more refined interaction between the three volumes.
The design is completed by gently elevated curved edges and elegantly tapered cylindrical solid wood legs, details that reinforce Torvits’ restrained and highly sculptural design language. Compact when stored and remarkably adaptable when separated, the set functions equally well as side tables, modular coffee tables, occasional tables, or flexible surfaces for entertaining and display.
The original Heltborg Møbler manufacturer’s mark remains preserved beneath the top of the primary table, reinforcing the authenticity and collectibility of the set.
The tables remain in exceptional vintage condition. The rosewood surfaces have been carefully maintained with natural oil, preserving their warmth and depth. The tops remain clean and beautifully preserved, with no significant fading, deep staining, or structural movement observed. All joints remain solid and stable.
A refined example of Danish modern design, where engineering, craftsmanship, and material expression are resolved into an elegant and highly versatile furniture system.
