Designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard for Dansk Designs in Denmark during the 1960s, this extra-large surfboard tray represents one of the most recognized and celebrated serving objects of Scandinavian modern design. The elongated proportions and sculptural construction transform a functional serving tray into a highly architectural centerpiece.
The tray is crafted using solid teak stave construction, where carefully selected strips of teak are joined and shaped together using techniques derived from traditional cooperage rather than veneer production. This method allows the dramatic grain movement of the teak to remain fully visible while creating exceptional structural stability across the unusually large surface.
The elongated elliptical form is defined by softly raised edges and integrated cut-out handles carved directly into the solid wood. On the underside, Quistgaard incorporated deep transverse relief grooves near each handle, reducing the overall weight while simultaneously improving grip and ergonomics during carrying. These subtle functional refinements reflect Quistgaard’s ability to merge utility and sculptural clarity with remarkable restraint.
As the largest and most sought-after version of the iconic Dansk surfboard tray series, the model 803 has become increasingly collectible among enthusiasts of Scandinavian modern design. The original burned Dansk maker’s mark remains present on the underside, reinforcing the authenticity and period production of the piece.
The tray remains in excellent vintage condition. The teak surfaces are clean and well preserved, with a rich and even patina throughout. The structure is solid, with beautifully defined grain and crisp sculptural detailing throughout the edges and handles.
