This tobacco jar was designed by Jean Gillon and produced by Italma Wood Art in Brazil during the 1960s. Crafted in solid rosewood, the piece reflects Gillon’s distinctive approach to organic form and material expression, where dense hardwood is shaped into a sculptural yet highly functional object.
The construction is formed through precisely joined solid wood segments, creating a rich variation of grain and tonal movement across the surface. The proportions are compact and balanced, with softly rounded edges and a fitted lid that integrates cleanly into the overall form. The result is both architectural and tactile, emphasizing the natural qualities of the material.
Jean Gillon played a central role in defining Brazilian modernist furniture and object design during the mid-century period. Smaller domestic objects such as this demonstrate the same level of care and refinement found in his larger furniture pieces, translating architectural principles into intimate scale. The use of Brazilian rosewood further reinforces the importance of the piece, as material quality and craftsmanship were essential components of Italma Wood Art production.
The jar remains in excellent vintage condition. The wood surfaces are exceptionally clean and well preserved, with a rich natural patina and precise lid fitment. The structure is solid throughout, with no significant wear or structural issues observed.
Examples in this condition have become increasingly difficult to source, particularly those retaining such well-preserved surfaces and strong grain definition.
