Designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard for Dansk Designs in Denmark around 1959–1960, the Viking Bowl model 830 remains one of the most sculptural and recognizable objects produced during the golden era of Scandinavian modern design.
The bowl is constructed using solid staved teak, where individual vertical teak segments are carefully joined together using traditional cooperage-inspired techniques rather than veneer construction. This method creates both exceptional structural stability and the highly distinctive striped grain rhythm visible throughout the form.
The silhouette is defined by its broad curved body and the pair of elevated horn-like handles extending from each side. These sculptural projections were intentionally conceived by Quistgaard as a reference to Nordic and Viking visual culture, transforming an otherwise functional serving object into an unmistakably architectural centerpiece. The softly curved walls transition continuously into the rounded base, creating a highly fluid and organic form from every angle.
The underside retains the early three-line burned maker’s mark reading “Staved Teak Danmark JHQ,” confirming an early Danish production example from the original manufacturing period. Earlier Danish-produced examples with this marking are increasingly difficult to source and remain particularly desirable among collectors of Dansk and Scandinavian modern decorative arts.
The bowl remains in excellent vintage condition. The teak surfaces are clean and well preserved, with a rich natural patina and strong grain definition throughout the interior and exterior surfaces. The structure is solid, with crisp sculptural detailing preserved throughout the handles and edges.
