This Z Down chair was designed by Erik Magnussen and produced by Torben Orskov in Denmark in 1968. The structure is formed in tubular steel, shaped into two continuous elements that intersect to create a stable Z-shaped profile. The geometry is direct and clearly expressed, with each component contributing to both structure and visual balance.
The seat and back are made from thick saddle leather, suspended within the frame. The leather adapts to the body over time, creating a supportive and responsive seating surface. The contrast between the polished steel and the natural material of the leather defines the overall composition.
The chair is foldable, with a simple mechanism that allows the frame to collapse while maintaining structural integrity when open. This system allows for easy storage and transport without compromising stability in use.
The chair is in very good vintage condition. The steel frame is clean and stable, with light wear consistent with age. The leather shows a natural patina, with an even surface and good structural integrity.
A well-resolved example of Danish design, where structure and material are expressed through a clear and functional form.
