Designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, the Model 3108, commonly known as the “Lily” chair, represents one of Jacobsen’s most expressive experiments with the possibilities of the molded plywood shell. This original vintage example was produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark in 1977 and retains its white finish.
The Lily is immediately recognizable by the dramatic contrast between its broad, wing-like upper back and exceptionally narrow waist. The shell expands outward across the shoulders before drawing sharply inward at the transition between back and seat, creating a continuous silhouette that appears almost stretched from a single flowing line.
This pronounced shaping distinguishes the 3108 from Jacobsen’s earlier molded-plywood chairs, including the Series 7. Rather than relying on a comparatively restrained hourglass profile, the Lily pushes the material into a more complex three-dimensional form, with a deeply articulated waist and broad upper section that give the chair its characteristic sculptural presence.
The molded shell is supported by a slender chromed-steel base, visually separating the expressive seat from the floor and maintaining the lightness characteristic of Jacobsen’s furniture for Fritz Hansen.
The Lily was developed in connection with Jacobsen’s work on Danmarks Nationalbank in Copenhagen and became one of his final chair designs. Its unusually wide shoulders and narrow centre demonstrate his continued exploration of pressure-molded veneer late in his career.
This example retains a Fritz Hansen production mark dated 1977, documenting its vintage Danish manufacture. The white shell is presented in original vintage condition, with age and wear consistent with use. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the condition.
