Designed by Percival Lafer in Brazil during the 1970s, this coffee table was conceived as the coordinating table for the MP-129 seating series. Manufacturer imagery published by Lafer shows this table presented as part of the complete MP-129 setting, together with the corresponding lounge chair and sofa, directly documenting its relationship to the series.
The design translates the exposed structural language of the MP-129 seating into a low, architectural table. A substantial jatobá frame is organized around four rectangular legs that extend slightly above the horizontal rails, creating raised corner elements that visually contain the large smoked-glass top.
Rather than concealing the method of assembly, Lafer incorporated exposed metal fasteners into the sides of the frame. These visible connections become part of the design and reinforce the straightforward relationship between structure and material found throughout Lafer’s furniture of the period.
The smoked glass provides a restrained contrast with the warm reddish-brown tones and pronounced natural grain of the jatobá. Its transparency leaves the wooden construction visible from above while reducing the visual weight of the substantial frame.
At 47.25 inches wide, the table is generously proportioned and particularly well suited to the low, substantial lounge seating of the MP-129 series. Archival manufacturer imagery shows the same table positioned alongside an MP-129 lounge chair and sofa, providing useful documentation of how the pieces were intended to function together as a coordinated interior group.
This example is presented in vintage condition, retaining the character developed through age and use. The jatobá frame shows surface wear and patina consistent with its age. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the condition.
