Designed by Brazilian architect Percival Lafer in 1973, the MP-61 lounge chair belongs to an experimental period in Lafer’s work characterized by unconventional materials, generous upholstery, and increasingly sculptural, low-slung forms.
Each chair is built around a molded fiberglass shell, deliberately left exposed across the exterior rather than concealed as an internal structure. The smooth, sculptural fiberglass surfaces create a strong contrast with the warm brown leather upholstery and dark wood bases.
Inside the shells, deeply cushioned brown leather forms the seats, backrests, and arms as continuous, enveloping compositions. The generous upholstery folds naturally around the perimeter of each shell, softening the geometric profiles and creating the relaxed seating position associated with Lafer’s furniture of the period.
The fiberglass bodies rest on low architectural wood bases, emphasizing the horizontal proportions of the chairs and creating a subtle floating effect. The combination of molded fiberglass, leather, and wood reflects Lafer’s exploration of industrial production methods alongside the material warmth associated with Brazilian Modern furniture.
Presented together, the two chairs form a particularly strong and symmetrical seating arrangement while retaining the substantial sculptural presence of the individual MP-61 design.
