Designed by Brazilian architect Percival Lafer in 1973, the MP-61 lounge chair is one of the more distinctive designs from Lafer’s prolific period of experimentation with unconventional materials, generous upholstery, and low-slung forms.
The chair is built around a molded fiberglass shell, left exposed across the exterior to become an integral part of the design rather than simply an internal structure. Its smooth, sculptural surface creates a striking contrast with the warm brown leather upholstery and dark wood base.
Inside the shell, deeply cushioned brown leather forms the seat, backrest, and arms as a continuous, enveloping composition. The generous upholstery folds naturally around the perimeter of the shell, softening its geometric profile and giving the chair the relaxed character associated with Lafer’s work of the 1970s.
The fiberglass body rests on a low architectural wood base, emphasizing the chair’s horizontal proportions and creating a subtle floating effect. The combination of molded fiberglass, leather, and wood reflects Lafer’s interest in bringing industrial production methods together with the warmth and material richness associated with Brazilian Modern design.
The MP-61 belongs to an especially experimental chapter of Lafer’s career, when molded materials and increasingly sculptural forms expanded the vocabulary of his earlier wood-framed furniture. Its enveloping profile and unusual exposed shell make it a particularly recognizable example of Brazilian design from the 1970s.
