Designed by Percival Lafer during the 1970s, the MP-81 lounge chair is one of the most recognizable expressions of Brazilian modern design. This example is accompanied by its matching ottoman and retains its original dark brown leather upholstery, paired with the exposed Brazilian jatobá structure characteristic of the model.
The MP-81 is built around a deeply cushioned upholstered body suspended within an expressive hardwood frame. Generous volumes of leather form the seat, back, and arms, with pronounced tufting creating the soft, enveloping character for which Lafer’s seating is celebrated. A cylindrical headrest extends across the upper back, completing the chair’s distinctive profile and providing additional support without interrupting the openness of the structure.
The exposed jatobá supports rise along the sides of the chair, functioning simultaneously as legs, structural anchors, and visual elements. Dense and richly toned, the Brazilian hardwood provides a strong counterpoint to the softness of the upholstery. Lafer leaves this relationship deliberately visible, allowing the construction itself to become part of the composition.
The matching ottoman carries the same vocabulary on a smaller scale, combining a generously tufted leather cushion with exposed jatobá supports. Together, the two pieces create a particularly complete expression of the MP-81 design and its emphasis on relaxed, informal comfort.
Both pieces retain their original dark brown leather, which remains in excellent vintage condition with a rich, naturally developed surface and light wear consistent with age and use. The leather shows attractive tonal variation and patina while remaining supple and well preserved. The jatobá frames are solid and stable, retaining their warm reddish-brown tone and expressive grain.
A beautifully preserved and complete example of Percival Lafer’s approach to Brazilian modernism, balancing generous comfort, exposed construction, and the contrasting qualities of leather and hardwood.
