Designed by Percival Lafer during the 1970s, the MP-97 side table combines a compact architectural form with the exposed construction and expressive use of Brazilian hardwood characteristic of Lafer’s furniture from the period.
The low, nearly square table is built around a sculptural solid jatobá frame, with rounded structural members forming distinctive U-shaped supports. Exposed metal fasteners become part of the composition rather than being concealed, reflecting Lafer’s direct approach to materials and construction.
A smoked glass top rests above the wooden structure, giving the table visual lightness while leaving the geometry and warm reddish-brown tones of the jatobá visible beneath. The contrast between transparent glass, substantial hardwood, and exposed hardware creates a particularly straightforward expression of Brazilian modern design.
Its compact proportions and low height make the MP-97 well suited as a side or end table alongside lounge chairs and sofas, while its restrained form allows it to work equally well as a standalone occasional table.
