Produced by Niels Eilersen in Denmark during the 1980s, this substantial three-seat sofa combines deep proportions, soft aniline leather, and an unusually generous arrangement of loose cushions designed around comfort and relaxed seating.
The sofa is composed of eight independent cushions, each fitted with a zipper at the rear. The cushions are filled with goose down, creating the soft, relaxed profile characteristic of the design and allowing the upholstery to settle naturally rather than maintaining a rigidly tailored form.
The sofa is upholstered in aniline leather, a minimally treated material that retains much of the natural character of the hide and develops a distinctive patina through use. The leather on this example displays the creasing, tonal variation, and surface character accumulated over decades, contributing to its relaxed appearance.
Despite its generous cushioning, the overall composition remains restrained. A low architectural body establishes a strong horizontal profile, while the individually articulated cushions soften the geometry and create a deep, enveloping seating experience.
Niels Eilersen has been producing upholstered furniture in Denmark since the late nineteenth century. By the latter half of the twentieth century, the company had become particularly associated with generously proportioned sofas emphasizing construction, material quality, and comfort. This 1980s example reflects that approach through its deep seating, loose down-filled cushions, and understated architectural form.
